Paganism on the Rise
It is now recognised that Paganism is not only here to stay but also, according to many media accounts, becoming one of the fastest growing religions in the country.
It certainly appeared so at the 2009 Winter Solstice where, within the beating heart of our nation, Stonehenge, hundreds of pagans, along with thousands of others throughout the country and around the world, celebrated the ancient ceremony to welcome back the light, as their revered ancestors had done for millennia before.
Braving fierce British weather conditions, Dolmen Grove members moved on Stonehenge, arriving from far-flung areas of the country and gathering in the track way, known as the Gallops, before beginning their well recognised procession into the Henge itself.
From within the Dolmen clan, a group of female pipers conjured the spirits of air whilst a backing of thunderous drums rumbled across the snow laden Wiltshire plains and resonated within the ancient stones.
As is customary within the Dolmen Grove, the banner portraying a horned half man, half beast character sat upon a dolmen stone, was carried proudly to the fore, followed by members of the clan itself, their dark clothing representing the neutrality and humble respect of earth energy and the peace between the realms of existence.
The Dolmen banner is not just a fascinating and evocative symbol, its very meaning is one of ancient belief. The horned half beast half human is one of the most ancient and revered pagan symbols and represents the spiritual connection between mankind, nature and the dependence upon each other in order to survive.
Playing a fiddle whilst seated upon the Dolmen Stone, the figure expresses the need to incorporate music, song and dance within ones spiritual practice. In other words the spiritual path should be one that is enjoyable and naturally incorporates those things in life that make us human.
The Dolmen stone, although an ancient tomb, is seen as the doorway between realms of existence. This leaves plenty of room for thought on the many frequencies in which life may exist as well as the human capability to connect on spiritual levels with these realms.
Leading the procession into the Stones, the ancients were summoned and the Henge once again became alive with the resonance of magical chant. To those who willingly opened their hearts, inspiration was received and passed around and the official three year countdown to 2012 was recognised.
BBC Interview.
During a recent interview with BBC religious correspondent Robert Pigott, the question was raised as to what we thought may be the main attraction of paganism and how it stands with regard to other mainstream religions?
The Dolmen Grove can only answer from its own perspective, as paganism serves as an umbrella term that covers many set paths such as Druidism and Witchcraft, as well as the freedom of one’s own choice of spirituality.
Freedom is the operative word as far as the Dolmen Grove is concerned.
The meaning of paganism will obviously differ from individual to individual, although there is a commonality of seeking the divine within nature in all paths.
To step away from the dogmatic systems of set religion is refreshing for those who are brave enough to do so and, can even have a vast effect upon the earth, as a nature based people will seek to work with the natural world rather than destroy it.
Pagans are not against technology, but they are opposed to the destructive forces it can sometimes unleash and, at present we can safely say it is being dangerously misused.
Hopefully as Paganism spreads the message of its non aggressive and sympathetic way of living, which is in harmony with the natural world, people will stop being so afraid and become more in tune with its aims which, are simply to allow people to think freely and take responsibility for their lives and their earth and to generate a global consciousness towards a lasting world wide peace.
